Neville Callam, the eighth general secretary and CEO of the Baptist World Alliance, died August 15.
Callam served as general secretary and CEO from 2007 to 2017. His election to the office marked a historic milestone as the first Black person and leader outside of Europe and North America to hold such a title within BWA. Callam was from Gibraltar, Jamaica.
Callam’s leadership within BWA was pivotal as the 2008 financial crisis unfolded and BWA further expanded its reach worldwide while improving its administrative and operational framework.
BWA welcomed 24 new member organizations during Callam’s tenure, expanding BWA’s presence into new territories and countries. New initiatives in mission and justice were also established, covering matters pertaining to race, gender, economy, human rights, and religious liberty.
Elijah Brown, general secretary and CEO of BWA, released a statement regarding the news of Callam’s death, highlighting the accomplishments made by Callam and his contributions to the BWA.
“The Baptist World Alliance gives thanks to God for the life and ministry of Rev. Dr. Neville Callam and surround his beloved wife, Dulcie, their children and grandchildren, the Jamaica Baptist Union, and countless friends and ministry partners around the world with our prayers and deepest condolences,” Brown said.

A pastoral statement page was created to mourn the loss of Callam.
Callam expressed his conviction in ministry, saying: “Living for Jesus is what my life is about. My calling is to serve the cause of Christ.”
