Wayland Baptist University cancelled classes Wednesday, Nov. 4, on its Plainview campus “following a gas leak near the intersection of Seventh and Quincy streets shortly after 9 a.m. today,” the university announced in a press release.
Faculty, staff and students were advised of the cancellation in an email from Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Cindy McClenagan.
McClenagan’s email noted, “Service to campus and safe return to office buildings and residence halls will likely not occur until 2:00 p.m. today,” thus, remaining classes, Nov. 4, are cancelled.
“Additionally, offices will remain closed for the rest of today. Faculty and staff may depart campus if it does not require starting a vehicle on the east side of campus, or if they have transportation/someone who can pick them up from Laney and deliver them to a safe location,” the email advised.
Students were instructed to go to Laney Student Activity Center and to avoid the effected side of campus until they received notification it was safe to return.
A SafeZone alert went out to students and employees at 9:22 a.m., and Wayland safely evacuated the Plainview campus shortly after the leak was reported, the press release said.
