Wayland Baptist University has been awarded a $2,500 grant to expand its First-Generation College Celebration, building on last year’s first formal observance with a broader week of activities recognizing first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The grant is provided by the Council for Opportunity in Education and FirstGen Forward, with support from Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America. Wayland is among institutions nationwide selected to receive funding. “Wayland’s emphasis on recruitment and retention of first-generation students allows the university to bring our Christian mission to a demographic once ignored by some institutions. Once these students are reached with education, then the gospel is presented, and discipleship can take place through other programs in place. The connection to our mission is definite, though subtle,” said Phillip Hamilton, WBU communications manager.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s College of Visual and Performing Arts invites the community to experience the arts on campus this fall, beginning with a One Voice concert Saturday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m., following the UMHB home football game. The concert will take place in Baugh Performance Hall in the Sue and Frank Mayborn Performing Arts Center. Garrett Hines’ exhibition “Sacred Windows” is currently on display in the gallery at the Baugh Center for the Visual Arts through Sept. 25. A lecture, “Journey of an Iconographer,” is scheduled for Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m. in Manning Chapel, located inside the Paul and Jane Meyer Christian Studies Center. “The arts are much more than a performance or exhibition. They are a vital way we make sense of the world, connect with one another, and express the creativity God has placed in each of us,” said Evan Campbell, UMHB associate dean of music.
The Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas will host a retirement celebration for Sandy Wisdom-Martin on Oct. 1 as she retires from her role as executive director-treasurer for the National WMU, where she served from 2010 to 2016. The celebration will be held at Hunters Glen Baptist Church in Plano from 6 to 8 p.m. Anyone planning to attend can click or tap here to make a reservation.
