Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Dustin Slaton: A Profile of Revival Prayer (Daniel 9:1-19)
Dustin Slaton, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Round Rock, planned to preach on prayer months before the Asbury Revival started, crediting God’s sovereignty with the timing. He noted Daniel’s prayer recorded in Daniel 9 is a revival prayer.
“Revivals are always preceded by powerful moments of prayer,” Slaton said, giving an account of the Prayer Revival of 1857. “We need to be people of prayer if we are going to see revival happen in our churches,” he said.
Prayer opens the door to revival and God’s Spirit, but doesn’t force God to act, Slaton declared. Obedience must accompany such prayer. Slaton then outlined five factors of revival prayer.
Revival prayer requires a relationship with Jesus, is motivated by God’s word and magnifies God. This prayer includes confession of sin and seeking forgiveness. “Revival will not come to the United States until the churches in the United States begin taking responsibility for walking away from the Lord,” Slaton declared. Revival prayer, then, “begs for divine restoration.”
This sermon was delivered Feb. 26, 2023, for the morning worship services of First Baptist Church in Round Rock. It is part of a series on the Book of Daniel titled “Kingdoms in Conflict.”
