Opened eyes

When I first received my assignment to serve in Philadelphia, I had feelings of excitement, nervousness and wonder.

Many people told me just because I had been assigned inside the states, it would not necessarily be like home, and I took their warning to heart. However, nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.

When we arrived in Philly I had no idea what to expect. It is good that I did not come in with any preconceived notions as to what the city should be like. It is a place that cannot really be explained to a girl like me—who grew up in the country—but only experienced. Traveling to the big city has opened my eyes to how different things are in other parts of our nation.

Recently, we have been working along side a Filipino church to offer Vacation Bible School. I have been assigned as a co-teacher at the recreation station. My major back home is fitness management, so this assignment has been right up my alley. I have had several teachers that have pushed me to try my hardest and do my best in all that I do. At this point, I am appreciative of the way they have been pushing me to succeed. God has used my passion for recreation and turned it into a great ministry.

I love working with the Filipinos. They are so warm and welcoming. Their hospitality is amazing.  Each time I go to the church, they treat me like family and welcome me in with open arms.  Working alongside one of the pastors in the congregation has been a great opportunity. God has paired us together and worked through us as a team in amazing ways. I have been learning a lot about this pastor’s dedication and excitement to work with the kids.  Many times, we have needed extra activities at the end of the lesson, and that is where God has brought in my passion and education in recreation.

I continue to grow in ways I did not know possible while on this trip. During this VBS, we have had children from varied religious backgrounds including Buddhist, Islam and many others. It’s been amazing to see God move in all the different people. God is good, all the time.
