Dallas: Not just checking off boxes on a to-do list
It’s not just a job; it’s a calling. I’ve had to remind myself of that truth recently.
It is that time of year. I have been serving six months working on different events, hosting Bible studies, going on campus to share the gospel with students and just living life with the student leaders. I love this, and I couldn’t think of spending my time any other way.
Jourdan PollockBut to be honest, there are times where we grow tired, weak and disappointed, and if we don’t keep our hearts and minds on Christ, we can see what we’re doing as just a job. We can see these things as tasks we have to do in order to check the box and get paid and nothing else. If we are not careful, we can lose the idea of why we are doing what we do.
We must remind ourselves of the gospel and remember why we are hosting events, going on campus and spending time with students.
A job is just work that we do to get paid, but a calling is much more. A calling is a strong urge to do something and live in a particular way. A year ago I was accepting that call to serve on a college campus in Dallas—not just taking on a job. Yes, there is work. After all, if we are to share the gospel, we must do something. However, God calls us to live in way in which the gospel shines through our lives.
I have challenged myself and I challenge others who may be experiencing this mindset to see what you’re doing as a calling and not just a job. Let’s not check boxes to say we have done them. Remember why we are doing it in the first place.
