As part of “Salmon Frenzy” in Kenai, Alaska, we helped fishermen for three weeks during dip-net season. While I was there, I noticed that Alaskan culture is quite different than the southern culture. People are more stand-offish.

One day, I was invited to go to someone’s dorm room just to meet his roommates. One of his roommates claimed to be a Christian, but he did not want anything to do with the Bible. I asked him why, and his response was: “I have already read it. I know what it says.”

The Northwest amazes me. God’s mighty hands have carved beautiful mountains and rivers. His fingers have laced people and their trades all over this vast land. And yet, God isn’t important to many people in the Northwest.

This summer more than anything I think I have realized the importance of building relationships. The people we have been working with are Latino, and they generally are not treated very well. So, we have had to gain their trust to be able to share with them.
