Guest editorial: The ‘talk’ black parents must have with their kids is unjust and also unfair

I remember the first time I was pulled over by police in my neighborhood. I was 16. My high school boyfriend was driving and we were headed to the movies. I was terrified and froze.

Kathryn FreemanMy boyfriend knew exactly what to do: He addressed the officer as “Sir” as he narrated his every move and explained that he was just taking me to the movies. The officer never gave us a ticket or explained why he stopped us. My boyfriend and I rode the rest of the way in silence, but I could tell he was upset.
