PLAINVIEW—Carlton Oby drew from Matthew 22:37-39 to remind Wayland Baptist University students that the greatest commandment is to love God and the second is to love one another.

Oby was the featured speaker for the 10th annual McCoy Lecture Series hosted by WBU and First Baptist Church in Plainview.

Established through First Baptist Church by a donation from the late Dorothy McCoy, a professor of mathematics at Wayland, the McCoy Lecture series seeks to honor her passion for missions and sharing the gospel.

Oby is associate executive director of Mercy Street in West Dallas, named the 11th poorest community in the nation. He addressed the students about the importance of loving one another and reaching out not only across the world, but in their own neighborhoods to touch the lives of people in need.

“What God asks us to do is love him and love other people,” Oby said.

Once people truly understand the depth of God’s love, it is easy to love him in return. The difficult task, he said, is to love other people.

“As flawed humans, we have a tendency to love those who love us,” Oby said. “But God has called us to so much more. He has called us to love the last, the least and the lost.”

“Love should not only take you across the globe and across the sea, but it should also take you across the room,” he said.
