LEAGUE CITY—Clear Creek Community Church in League City canceled worship services July 4 and 7 at all of its campuses after more than 125 students and adults who attended youth camp tested positive for COVID-19.

Local health officials reported at least three test samples revealed the highly contagious Delta variant of the virus.

More than 400 people participated in Camp Creek, an event for sixth grade through 12th grade students at Trinity Pines Camp, Pastor Bruce Wesley said in an online statement posted July 3.

“Unfortunately, upon return from camp, 125-plus campers and adults reported to us that they tested positive for COVID-19. Additionally, hundreds more were exposed to COVID-19 at camp. And hundreds of others were likely exposed when infected people returned home from camp,” Wesley stated.

In consultation with the Galveston County Health District, the church decided to cancel its worship services and issue a public statement, he added, noting Sunday services are expected to resume July 11.

“From the beginning of the pandemic, we have sought to love our neighbors by practicing strict safety protocols. We are surprised and saddened by this turn of events,” Wesley stated.

“Our hearts break for those infected with the virus. Please pray for a speedy and complete recovery for all of those affected.”

Multiple news outlets reported the Galveston County Health District identified the Delta variant of COVID-19 in three test samples. County health officials confirmed six breakthrough cases in which someone was infected more than two weeks after receiving a second COVID-19 vaccination.

Of the 35,228 positive cases of COVID-19 in Galveston County since the pandemic started, 10,963 were in League City, according to data from the Galveston County Health District.

Clear Creek Community Church is a multisite congregation affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
