DALLAS—Seventeen staff from the Dallas Baptist University business office and their families helped Mission Arlington clean its Tannisch House, so the volunteer center could be used for storage this winter.
“We do get pretty dirty on these service days, but we leave feeling incredibly blessed for being part of what God is doing at Mission Arlington,” said Julie Carlisle, director of payroll at DBU.
“We want to model what it is we ask of our students in the area of servant leadership.”
By involving their families, staff members also have an opportunity to teach their children the virtues of service, Carlisle added.
“We had a desire to give back, as the Lord had blessed us, and we thought Mission Arlington was a great organization with which to partner,” she said.
DBU staff members clean Mission Arlington’s Tannisch House at the beginning of the summer before volunteers arrive and at the end of the summer after the busy season ends.
After working together on the project for several years, members of the team have become experts in dividing the tasks needed to conquer the two-story home—from mopping and dusting to sweeping and cleaning windows, Carlisle noted.
“We learn that we enjoy working together, and when we are serving together outside of DBU, we serve better at DBU,” said Eric Bruntmyer, vice president of financial affairs.

“I have seen us grow closer as staff members and have enjoyed getting to know each other’s spouses as well as children.”
The DBU staff members enjoy the behind-the-scenes work. They see the work as a ministry to encourage the volunteers who come from around the country to serve in Arlington.
“They don’t take anything for granted at Mission Arlington and view everything from the resources they receive to the volunteers that serve as gifts,” Carlisle said.
