Elijah Brown, general secretary of the Baptist World Alliance, will focus on Baptist responses to major global events—including conflict in Ukraine and Israel—when he delivers the 16th annual Currie-Strickland Distinguished Lectures in Christian Ethics.

“This year’s lectures will be a lot more accessible for everybody,” both in terms of their approach and the schedule, said Jordan Villanueva, instructor of Christian studies at HPU, and organizer of the lectures.

The lectures will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 31 in Mims Auditorium during HPU student chapel and at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Richard and Wanda Jackson Conference Room of the Paul and Jane Meyer Faith and Life Leadership Center.

“We wanted the lectures to have a bigger impact on the students and community. We decided to have it on Wednesday and Thursday so Brown would speak in front of the students during chapel,” Villanueva said.

“While Dr. Brown is an academic, he was also a pastor for a number of years. It should be more accessible for our students and the community.”

In the first session, Brown will offer a biblical framework for why Christian ethics matter and why Christians should discuss ethical issues. In the second lecture, he will present stories based on first-hand Baptist responses.
