The annual Senior Saints Summit at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will be held May 14-17. Mell Plunk is the preacher, Tony Martin the Bible teacher and Larry Putman the worship leader. This is the 15th and final Senior Saints Summit, and many of previous preachers and teachers are expected to attend. For more information, email bill.muske@umhb.edu.

Judson LaGrone, a nursing student at East Texas Baptist University, was presented the Good Shepherd Hospital Hero Award for stopping a child's abduction from the hospital's emergency room. He was working in the emergency room as a part of his student clinical rotation.

Howard Payne University partnered with Brownwood-based Good Samaritan Ministries to once again feed hungry families in the community through the annual Empty Bowls project held last week at the Brownwood Coliseum. More than $16,000 was raised during the event. Approximately 850 people attended the event, purchasing bowls hand-decorated by HPU students and other community volunteers and enjoying soup donated by local restaurants. Ninety percent of the proceeds from the event will benefit local families through Good Samaritan Ministries, while the remaining 10 percent will go toward fighting hunger worldwide.

Jack Goodyear has been named dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Dallas Baptist University. He has been an assistant professor of political science at DBU since 2008. He and his family are members of First Church in Arlington.

Hardin-Simmons University held a ceremony to commemorate the donation of a digital organ in the university's Behren's Auditorium. The organ was third donated to the university by Burton Patterson. The organ replicates the sound of the pipe organ it replaced. The pipe organ was damaged by a leaking roof.

• The Howard Payne University model United Nations team participated in the world conference held in Vancouver, Canada. HPU students represented Nicaragua and Norway.

Death

Jack Patterson, 85, Feb. 28 in Richmond, Va. He served as a pastor, missionary professor and director of missions. He was pastor of First Church in Burleson from 1953 to 1956 until he began teaching at the International Baptist Seminary in Cali, Colombia, where he stayed until 1966. He served as pastor to a Virginia congregation until moving to Gambrell Street Church in Fort Worth in 1983. In 1985, he returned to Virginia, where he served two associations as director of missions. He is survived by his wife, Pat; sons, John Jr. and Scott; daughters, Patricia Leighty, Leighanne Parrish, Michelle Patterson and Heather Patterson; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
