Obituary: Ed Wilson

Ed Wilson, 67, Jan. 30 in Beaumont. He served as organist and then minister of music at Lake Shore Baptist Church in Waco.

In 1991, he became associate pastor of music and administration at Calder Baptist Church in Beaumont, where he served until his death.

He is survived by his son, Matt; daughters, Amye Wilson and Erin Chrisman; foster daughter, Sherrill Magnuson; brother, Jim; sister, Pamela McAffrey; and five grandchildren.

Jacquelyn Barron, 86, Jan. 5 in Dallas. She was a graduate of Baylor University and earned a master’s degree at Hardin-Simmons University at age 77. Jacquelyn BarronAn avid reader, several years ago she donated a large collection of the works of William Faulkner—including several rare first editions—to HSU. She and her husband established several scholarships at Baylor, Hardin-Simmons and Howard Payne universities to promote higher education. She was a member of HSU’s board of development and a member of the John G. Hardin Society, which helps maintain the long-term fiscal stability of HSU. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanton. She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Nesbit, Joanne Newton, Beverly Barnes and Kathleen Hamilton; sister, Joanne Williams; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bea Lewis, 70, Jan. 2 in New Orleans. She was a member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and also had served on the Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas Executive Board. She worked with Baptist Women, Mission Friends, Acteens, Mission Action, lay renewal, Mission Service Corps, the Mission Development Council and several other organizations. She also was assistant manager of the Home and Hope Shelter in Killeen. She was a member of Soldiers of the Cross Cowboy Fellowship in Nolanville. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Howard, and grandson, Reginald Richardson. She is survived by her sons, Michael, James and William; daughter, Monica Woods; brother, Russell Howard; sisters, Barbara Howard, Gail Williams, Katherine Franklin, Marilyn Howard, Carolyn Howard and Evelyn Stevens; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Moses Perales, 83, Jan. 12 in Fort Worth. A moises perales130Moses Peralesformer pastor, he also was a former president of the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas and director of missions for the North Texas Hispanic Baptist Association. He was a graduate of Hardin-Simmons University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rachel; daughter, Ysela Rosales; sons, Moses and Thomas; and five grandchildren.

Helio Perez, 92, Jan. 13 in Harlingen. A master plumber and business owner, he was the father of Bea Mesquias, president of the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas and former president of Hispanic Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatriz; sons, Alejandro and David; grandson, Raul Perez Jr.; brothers, Manuel and Johnny; and sister, Bertha Arrisa. He is survived by his daughters, Bea Mesquias, Rose Silguero, Bertha Perez and Mary Lou Schanen; sons, Raul and Helio Jr.; brother, Federico; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.




Obituary: Clinton Wolf

Clinton Wolf, 86, died Jan. 2, in El Paso. Following his service in the Navy in World War II, he attended Hardin-Simmons University, where he graduated in 1950. He worked for Standard Oil three years, and then he began a 60-year Clinton Wolfcareer in construction and real estate development. Throughout his adult life, he was a member of First Baptist Church in El Paso. He was a former member of the HSU board of trustees and the school’s board of development, a lifetime member of the President’s Club and recipient of the John J. Keeter Alumni Service Award in 2006. The school awarded him an honorary doctorate of humanities in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joann; daughters, Laura Nichols, Sharon Lafayette and Julia Ortiz; son, Gene; sisters, Mary Ellen Boughner and Ann Eaton; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.




Obituary: Henry Adrion III

Henry Adrion III, 78, Nov. 25 in Hilltop Lakes near Normangee. A graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he was a minister more than 50 years. Henry Adrion IIIHe was pastor of Elm Grove Baptist Church in Waelder, Muldoon Baptist Church in Muldoon, First Baptist Church in Eagle Lake, Bethel Baptist Church in Houston, Polytechnic Baptist Church in Fort Worth, University Baptist Church in Clear Lake and First Baptist Church in Texas City. In addition, he was director of church services for the Baptist General Convention of Texas from 1983 to 1994. After retiring, he served many Central Texas churches as interim pastor. He served on the Southern Baptist Brotherhood Commission, the BGCT Christian Education Coordinating Board, and the BGCT Executive Board. He was a trustee for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 16 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pat; daughters, Michele Halliburton and Monica Manning; son, Mark; and eight grandchildren.




Obituaries: Terry Martinaz, Ben Loring Jr.

Terry Martinaz, 66, Nov. 16 in The Woodlands. A graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served in ministry 38 years.Terry Martinaz He was minister of education at Hillcrest Park Baptist Church in Arlington, First Baptist Church in White Settlement and First Baptist Church in Madison, Miss. In 2005, he moved to The Woodlands and began work as a consultant to churches representing LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church in The Woodlands. He is survived by his wife, Lynda; son, Gary; and step-sister, Jan Kindlinger.

Ben Loring, Jr., 67, Nov. 16 in Saline, Mich., from complications of frontal lobe dementia. He was a graduate of Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was pastor of churches in the Waco while a Baylor student and served on the staffs of First Baptist Church in Houston, the Texas Christian Life Commission, the Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission and Antioch Community Church in Waco. He was pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, First Baptist Church in Lawton, Okla., First Baptist Church in Amarillo and was founding pastor of Mercy Place in Dallas, which is now Antioch Community Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his son, John, and daughter, Rebekah McBride.




Obituary: Bob Lawrence

Bob Lawrence, 92, Sept. 8 in Amarillo. While a student at Hardin-Simmons University, he served Calvary Baptist Church, Sunset Baptist Church and Southside Baptist Church, all of Abilene, as music director. While serving at Sunset, he was ordained to the ministry. Following graduation, he was called as music and education director at Bob LawrenceCalvary Baptist Church in Mineral Wells. He later moved to First Baptist Church in Decatur, where he was serving when he graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He then served nine years as minister of music and education at First Baptist Church in Hereford. He left Texas to serve two churches in Colorado. When the Northern Plains Baptist Convention formed in 1967, covering four western states, he became director of the music and education departments. In 1975, he began serving in a similar capacity with the Colorado Baptist Convention. He retired in 1984. In 2005, he moved to Amarillo and joined First Baptist Church there. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene, and sister, Carol Meisenheimer. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Charlene; daughter, Lanell Adler; son, Don; sisters, Norma Daniel and Betty Evans; one grandson; and one step-great-grandson.




Obituaries: Bryan, Minami, Huff

Katharine Bryan, 78, Oct. 26 in Knoxville, Tenn. She was Texas Woman Missionary Union Young Woman’s Auxiliary and Baptist Young Woman’s Director from 1965 to 1977. She was born and raised in Tennessee and worked with the Tennessee Baptist Convention after her graduation from Carson-Newman University. In 1961, she became a program associate with the Southern Baptist Convention WMU in Birmingham, Ala., coordinating activities there until she came to serve with Texas WMU 12 years. After she earned her doctorate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, she worked with the SBC’s Mission Education Council and Richland College in Dallas as director of the adult resource center. She went on to become executive director of Tennessee WMU, where she served until 1997. From 1997 to 2000, she was director of adult education at Carson-Newman University. She was preceded in death by her brother, George Bryan.

Terry Minami, 61, Nov. 9 in Milwaukee, Wisc. She served 18 years as administrative assistant to the terry minami107dean of university libraries at Hardin-Simmons University. She had undergone treatment for pancreatic cancer the past 18 months. She volunteered for countless activities both on campus and throughout the community. She also invited students to join her for Sunday meals. She often was called on to demonstrate her ability to create objects by folding paper. She made thousands of origami pieces for family and friends, and she spent many hours teaching the skill to others. She was the sponsor for the International Student Fellowship; the HSU chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service organization; and the student newspaper, The Brand. She was honored with HSU’s Altom Christian Service Award for outstanding and exemplary Christian service in 2011. An endowed scholarship at HSU has been established in her honor. She is survived by her mother, Ruth Minami; son, Sean Fuqua; daughter, Amy Fuqua; and brother, Robert Minami.

terry huff107Taylor Huff, 21, Nov. 10 in Abilene. The Hardin-Simmons University student and football player was hit by a vehicle during an early morning walk. A senior wide receiver, he had played in eight games and had three catches for 34 yards. He played in 19 games during his career. He is survived by is parents, Richard and Lori Strawn, and brother, Terrance.

Gilbert Mercado, 64, Oct. 5 in Paducah. He was custodian of First Baptist Church in Paducah 43 years. Mercado started cleaning the Gilbert Mercadochurch facility when he was a high school student in 1970, and served with 10 pastors during his tenure.. He is survived by his sisters, Rosa Pina, Minnie Ramos, Lupe Hernandez and Dora Espinosa; and brother, Johnny.

He also worked as a heavy equipment operator, carpenter and oil-field worker. He was preceded in death by his son, Marvin. Charles Price, 67, Oct. 30 in San Antonio. He felt God’s call to ministry at age 17 and formed an evangelistic team that led youth revivals in the Southwest. A graduate of Hardin-Simmons University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he was pastor of several churches in Texas and New Mexico, including Trinity Baptist Church in Dallas, Freeman Heights Baptist Church in Garland and First Baptist Church in Canyon. For the past 13 years, he was executive director of San Antonio Baptist Association. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sheri; sons, Lee and Judson; brothers, Harold and Larry; sisters, Ellen Sharpley, Charlotte Atkinson and Jo Carter; and five grandchildren.

Sealy Smith, 87, Oct. 22 in Weatherford. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a tail gunner on a B-24, flying 13 combat missions over Germany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; sisters, Katherine Hogan and Peggy McCoy, and brothers, Jim and Butch. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Conway and Jayme Parks; sons, Terry Smith, Greg Smith and Ronnie Warren; sister, Gayle Lynch; and nine grandchildren.

Dorothy Fletcher, 80, Oct. 16 in Abilene. She was the wife of Hardin-Simmons University President Emeritus Jesse Fletcher. She also was active in the churches they served or attended, including teaching special-needs children in Sunday school. She was preceded in death by two children in infancy, Angela and Kathy Fletcher. She is survived by her husband of 59 years; son, Scott; daughter, Melissa Fletcher; brother, James Jordan; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Marilyn Campbell, 86, Oct. 21 in Tioga. She served alongside her husband, R.C. In 1989, Buckner named the administration building at Buckner Villas in Austin in her honor. O.O. Ervin, 89, Sept. 2 in Lewisville. A pastor, he led congregations in Corpus Christi, Bynum, Mount Calm, New London, Kingsville and Padre Island. He retired to Wimberley, where he continued to serve as needed. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Lively; and brother, Lester. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Kitty Gant; son, Mackey; sister, Jean Dudley; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.




Obituaries: Doris Kelley, Dorothy Poole

Doris Kelley, 91, Sept. 19 in New Orleans. After she was orphaned at an early age, she was raised by her maternal grandparents. Growing up, she was a member of First Baptist Church Doris Kelleyin San Antonio, where she later served as a secretary. After marrying Charles Kelley, the couple moved to Beaumont, where he was a managing partner of Kelley-Hixon Funeral Home. They were members of First Baptist Church in Beaumont 40 years before moving to New Orleans in 2002. There, they attended First Baptist Church in New Orleans. Endowed scholarships for women at both Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary were created in her honor in recent years. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Patterson, Kathy Kelley, Charlene Coe and Eileen Turrentine; son, Chuck; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Dorothy Poole, 89, Oct. 1 in Mansfield. A teacher for 20 years, she also was a founder and board member of the Grayson County Crippled Children’s Center.
