Herbert C. Garrett Jr., former Texas Baptist pastor, died Dec. 24, 2020. He was 92.

Herbert C. Garrett Jr., former Texas Baptist pastor, died Dec. 24, 2020. He was 92. He was born in Woodruff, S.C., on Dec. 9, 1928 to Herbert C. Garrett and Viola Brown Garrett. He attended the Citadel but left a semester early to join the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He served in Japan and Korea. After five years of military service, he returned to complete his degree at Carson-Newman University before entering Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he met and married Jane Houston. He was pastor of five Texas Baptist churches and eight churches in South Carolina. In retirement, he served 21 South Carolina churches as interim pastor. He received an honorary doctorate from Howard Payne University in Brownwood. He was instrumental in the organization of Baptist College of Charleston and served on the board of three other Baptist colleges, two homes for the aging, and many additional committees and boards. He was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Spartanburg County Baptist Network and pastor emeritus by Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, S.C. An avid traveler, he made eight trips to Jerusalem and led tours of numerous European countries. He spent six weeks in South Africa at the invitation of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board. He is survived by sons Steven Charles Garrett and wife Katherine, Robert Naylor Garrett, Daniel Houston Garrett and Paula Kathryn Garrett; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Garrett Welborn.
