The Baptist General Convention of Texas evangelism division will conduct a Spanish language 4xFour evangelism clinic  from 9 a.m. to noon May 30 at Crosspoint Church Español in Bellaire. 4xFour is a process to reach people with the Gospel.

Howard Payne University honored Bill Fowler, associate professor of Christian studies, as outstanding faculty member of the year and Bobbie Price, certification coordinator and graduation assistant, as the outstanding staff member. Certificates recognizing excellence in teaching were received by Danny Brunette-Lopez, associate professor of Spanish, and Kathy Hagood, associate professor of English. Rebecca Mainka and Matt Zinser were recognized for excellence in service. Length of service awards were presented to Robert Mangrum, university historian and professor of government and history, 35 years; and Mary Dunham, assistant professor of library science and technical services librarian, 30 years. Also recognized for 25 years of service were Brenda Brittain, Gerry Clarkson, and Gary Gramling; 20 years, Wendy Grooms, John Nickols and Bertha Valle; and 15 years, Mary Griffin, Kathy James, Tracy Stansberry and Patricia Valencia.

Buckner Children and Family Services will present a free foster-care and adoption information meeting May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at 5200 Buckner Blvd. in Dallas. Participants will receive an overview of foster care and adoption options in Texas, including foster-to-adopt, Waiting Texas Children, and domestic infant adoption and international adoption programs. Around the State: Bike Out Hunger

The 6th annual Bike Out Hunger-Texas will be May 11-16, 2015. The ride – about 450 miles from Boerne to Austin to Dallas – is intended to raise awareness about poverty and raise money for the Texas Baptist Hunger Offering.

Howard Payne University’s Model United Nations team excelled at an international conference in Münster, Germany, bringing home six awards from various committees. Cara DeLoach of San Angelo, Jimmy Abbatiello of Kerrville, Katie Rose Bonner of Lytle and Gavin Stewart of Flower Mound each was named the outstanding delegate from his or her respective committee. Bonner also won the best position award for her committee. Cody Perrin of Eastland was awarded honorable mention for his committee work.

James McGinlay, May 3, after 65 years of ministry. He has been a pastor 54 years, the last 22 serving at First Baptist Church of Lakeside in Fort Worth. He also was a pastor in Archer City, Lubbock, Greenville and Phoenix, Ariz. He preached in more than 500 churches during his years as an evangelist. He will continue to be available to preach.

Around the State: BCFS at Fiesta de los Niños

To connect directly with San Antonio families during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, BCFS—formerly Baptist Child & Family Services—participated in Fiesta de los Niños, April 18. The event featured a parade, games, rides and musical performances. Parent educators with BCFS’ child abuse prevention programs joined in the fun, parading down the street sporting hats they decorated themselves (see photo above).

He outlined the history of his family’s businesses and also spoke about his family’s latest venture, The Museum of the Bible, scheduled to open in Washington, D.C., in 2017. 

Howard Payne University’s athletic training education program has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. Graduates of the program now can take the examination to become certified athletic trainers through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

She came to ETBU in 1997 as a professor of teacher education and was named dean in 2008. She received a decorative crystal bowl as a token of her service.

Texas Baptist Men’s well-drilling and water-purification ministry held a training event April 11 at the Dixon Mission Equipping Center in East Dallas. Classes provided a basic overview of the ministry’s mission, with specialized training in various procedures and mechanics used in its outreach, from water-well-drilling to filter construction.

Around the State: ETBU students return from Beach Reach

Thirty-nine East Texas Baptist University students joined the Beach Reach effort to evangelize college students for Christ during spring break. In total, 1,060 volunteers engaged in servant evangelism while providing 27,396 van rides and serving 21,000 pancakes during the three weeks of ministry.

Morgan Garrett was crowned Miss ETBU during the 59th occurrence of the East Texas Baptist University’s pageant. The junior kinesiology major also is a captain of the university’s women’s basketball team. Katelyn Pope, a junior nursing major from Carthage, was first runner-up, and Natile Orr, a sophomore business marketing major from Lumberton, was second-runner up.

First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City will present the musical “Shelter” April 19 at 10:30 a.m. in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Murrah Building. “The sadness still lingers,” Minister of Music Kim Greer said. “The songs from ‘Shelter’ encourage us to be still and pour out our laments. They also give us strength and comfort to move past tragedy to experience God’s perfect peace and healing presence in our lives.” Admission is free.




Around the State: DBU students travel for spring break missions

Three teams of Dallas Baptist University students served during spring break. One group traveled to South Padre Island to participate in the Baptist General Convention of Texas sponsored Beach Reach, while another flew to Chile to minister to students at Temuco Baptist College. At third team went to Florida to help with Habitat for Humanity—some at a construction site and others at Habitat ReStore location where they sorted clothes and rearranged furniture. The Habitat construction crew is pictured above.

Glenn Bickerdike received East Texas Baptist University’s 2015 Sam B. Hall Jr. Civic Service Award during the lecture series’ banquet. Bickerdike, a former ETBU trustee, received a blown-crystal cup in commemoration. He is a deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church in Marshall.

Wayland Baptist University students Olivia Bybee of Amarillo and Lauren Chase of Claude visited the state capitol to lobby for continuation of the Tuition Equalization Grant, a program that helps private school students attend the university of their choice. The grant helps low- and middle-income Texas residents offset the cost of private school tuition, with an average grant of $3,380.

Around the State: NOW conference focuses on South Asia

Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano will be the site for the South Asia NOW Conference April 26-28. Speakers will include Danny Akin, Nik Ripken and John Brady. International Mission Board leaders for South Asia also will attend. The Texas Baptist Missions Foundation has named Jerry Carlisle vice president. He is pastor of First Baptist Church in Plano, where he has served more than 12 years. Previously Carlisle, a former president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, was pastor of First Baptist Church in Temple and Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell. He also served on the staffs of Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston and Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving.

Howard Payne University will hold its annual spring revival—Resurrection Week—March 30 through April 1. Mike Satterfield, founder of Field of Grace Ministries and teaching pastor at Fielder Church in Arlington, is this year’s speaker. Mike Romero Music of Houston will lead worship. Services on Monday and Tuesday will be held at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the last service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Hardin-Simmons University inducted Hilton Hemphill, John Hyde and Bertie Kingore into its Hall of Leaders. The hall provides a permanent recognition of graduates, former students, former employees and other university leaders who have distinguished records of achievement and have proven themselves to be of good character.

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor graduate Kelsey Kunk and seniors Elizabeth Stefanski and Kelsey Belcher attended the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society’s annual convention in Chicago. Belcher and Stefanski entered the student presentation competition and both won top honors. Belcher participated in the world history category, where her presentation, “Dissection, Body Snatchers and Reform,” was awarded first place. Stefanski’s entry in the American literature category, “How Do Movies Affect the Readership of Young Adult Books,” also won first place. Each was awarded $100. They also received scholarships of $1,200 and $1,000, respectively. 

Baylor University has appointed Michael McLendon as dean of the School of Education, effective July 1. He is a professor and associate dean of Southern Methodist University’s Simmons School of Education and Human Development. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Baylor in 1991. He and his family are members of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas. 

East Texas Baptist University honored 15 students for their inclusion in the 2015 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges with a reception.

Around the State: HPU students return from Beach Reach ministry

Nineteen Howard Payne University students offered free breakfasts and the gospel to South Padre Island beachgoers during spring break. Marking its 35th year, the Texas Baptist Beach Reach ministry drew hundreds of student volunteers from Texas college campuses. 

A youth worship leader camp featuring musicians baylor worshiplab425David Crowder, Robbie Seay, Shaun Groves and Leslie Jordan will be held concurrently with this summer’s Alleluia Conference at Baylor University. Deadline to submit an audition video for the camp, hosted by Baylor’s Center for Music Studies, has been extended to Good Friday, April 3. The Alleluia Conference and youth worship camp will be held July 21-24 on the Baylor campus. Final selections will be made April 15, with 100 slots open and a registration of $300 per student, which includes room and board. No audition fee will be charged. The camp is geared toward young aspiring worship leaders and instrumentalists—ninth grade through graduating seniors. Hope Clinic in Garland, a nonprofit faith-based community clinic, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for its new location April 17 at 11 a.m. at 800 South 6th Street. The clinic serves almost 2,000 economically disadvantaged patients. Care is free, but donations are accepted. Prescription assistance last year totaled $500,000. The clinic has 13 paid staff, including a full-time and part-time physician, supported by a network of 48 volunteer physicians who provide free medical care across a variety of specialties.

East Texas Baptist University presented the etbu nissley350Gerald Nissley Jr. spoke during the East Texas Baptist University chapel service, where he received the Ward Walker Award for the integration of faith and learning.2015 Ward Walker Awardto Gerald Nissley Jr., assistant professor of psychology. The award honors a faculty member who pursues the integration of faith and learning within his or her academic discipline. He helped establish the ETBU Counseling Center, which provides low-cost services to the ETBU community.

Ed Spann was Dallas Baptist University’s featured speaker for the George H. Gallup Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series. He spoke on the contents of his book Presidential Praise: Our Presidents and their Hymns, which he wrote with Michael Williams, DBU professor of history. Spann highlighted the Christian faith of several U.S. presidents and the effect hymns had on that faith. He and his wife, Jan, are members of First Baptist Church in Duncanville.




Around the State: Beach Reach spring break outreach launches

About 350 Baptist Student Ministry volunteers from Texas college campuses are spending their spring break at Beach Reach, providing free rides, free breakfasts and sharing the gospel on South Padre Island, March 7-13 and March 14-20.

Wendell Griffen, who is both pastor of New Millennium Church in Little Rock and an Arkansas circuit judge, will present “Repentance, Reconciliation and Baptists” in a two-part lecture series. The first lecture will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Logsdon Chapel. The concluding speech will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Behrens Auditorium.

East Texas Baptist University’s annual Sam B. Hall Jr. Lecture and banquet has been rescheduled for March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Phillips Great Room. The event was postponed due to inclement weather. Phillip Meyer, Houston businessman and ETBU trustee, will speak on his life experiences and growth in faith as a business leader. The program also will include announcement of the Sam B. Buckner International’s Wynnewood Family Hope Center in South Dallas will hold a community health awareness day March 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free services to the community will include mammograms, blood pressure checks, HIV testing, dental screens, cholesterol and diabetes checks, immunizations and asthma screenings. Representatives from community service agencies also will be on hand with educational materials about the services they offer. The Wynnewood Family Hope Center cares for more than 120 vulnerable children in Dallas through after-school and summer day camp services. It is located at 2006 Didsbury Circle in Dallas.

Howard Payne University’s speech and debate team competed at the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association spring championship and won third place overall debate sweepstakes and fifth place overall sweepstakes. HPU senior Marcos Corley of Corpus Christi was named to the Texas All-State Forensics Squad.

Robertson’s family is the subject of a reality television show and is known for their strong faith in Christ and long beards. He explained to the capacity crowd that he is a normal guy with struggles like everyone else, but his faith in Jesus Christ and his desire to tell others about him keeps him grounded.

A prayer service in response to terrorism and Christian persecution will be held March 26 at 7 p.m. at North Hills Baptist Church in Whitesboro. Dallas Baptist University honored Lou Esparza for her 25 years of service to the school. She began working at the school in both undergraduate admissions and development before being named academic projects administrator, where she is responsible for developing and editing the class schedules.

Around the State: HPU art exhibit

Howard Payne University is hosting “Above and Below I-10: Cross Country 2015,” a national art exhibition that will run through March 27. The exhibition is held at the Dorothy and Wendell Mayes Art Gallery in the Doakie Day Art Center. Fifty-two works by 31 artists around the country were selected for the exhibition. Visitors can view the art Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed March 9-13.

Baylor University will host a global religious freedom summit March 19 at 2 p.m. bob fu91Bob FuA panel—made up Ken Starr, Baylor president and chancellor; Frank Wolf, a former U.S. congressman and the university’s Jerry and Susie Wilson Chair in Religious Freedom; and Pastor Bob Fu, president and founder of The China Aid Association—will discuss the current situation of those facing religious persecution around the world and the importance of engaging the issue. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

Children at Heart Ministries will host its annual A Day at Miracle Farm in Brenham April 4. There will be a petting zoo, wagon rides and horseback rides for children and campus tours and free ice cream for everyone. A live auction of crafts made by the boys of Miracle Farm and a barbecue also will be held. Barbecue tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event. Baptist Student Ministries and these students are leading an effort to combine the 30-Hour Famine with the End It Movement to raise awareness and money to benefit victims of human trafficking.Vision’s 30-Hour Famine with End It Movement’s Shine a Light on Slavery Day to raise awareness of both sex slavery/trafficking and child hunger. In addition to participating in the fast, students supporting an end to human trafficking were asked to put a red X on their hands, the symbol of the End It Movement. A chapel service focused on slavery, and students, faculty and staff prayed for the issues in a prayer tent set up on campus. Organizations and individuals also made financial donations.
