The Hardin-Simmons University fine arts department has scheduled several events as part of a Lenten organ recital series. A concert will be held at First Baptist Church in Abilene April 1 from 12:15 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. HSU professor Hye-Jean Choi and Rob Carlton, a member of the church, will accompany the church’s choir. A 12:15 p.m. April 8 event is set for the Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest in Abilene, featuring members of the Big Country American Guild of Organists. The April 17 Maundy Thursday service will be held at HSU’s Logsdon Chapel at 11:55 a.m. It will feature soprano Rosie Hollingsworth and organists Choi, Jessica Spurgers and Daniel Smith.
The Wayland Baptist University opera company will perform April 25-26 at 7:30 p.m. in Harral Auditorium.
Houston Baptist University has announced the naming of the Sadie and Doug Hodo Residence College, currently known as the Lake House. A dedication and reception will take place April 28 at 2 p.m. Hodo served as the second president of the university from 1987 to 2006.
A marriage retreat for ministers and their spouses will be held May 1-3 at the Cornerstone Lodge in Scurry. Check-in is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and the event concludes at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The cost is $125 for Baptist General Convention of Texas-affiliated ministers and $375 for non-BGCT church ministers. The cost includes lodging, four meals and snacks, and retreat curriculum. Howard Payne University freshman Jaclyn Bonner was named national champion in novice informative speaking during the National Christian College Forensics Association tournament held at California Baptist University.
Dawna Walsh has been named Dallas Baptist University’s adviser of the year. The professor of art and fine arts has been a full-time faculty member since 1978 and has served as chair of the art department. She and her husband, John, are members of First Baptist Church in Dallas.
About 200 volunteers participated in a four-day Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief Volunteer Roundup at Big Country Baptist Assembly at Lueders. Participants received training in about a dozen specialized disaster relief ministries.

First Baptist Church in Salado, 150th, May 4. The children of the church will each take a turn tugging the rope attached to the churchbell to mark the beginning of the celebration with Sunday school at 9:15 a.m. A video of interviews with former
pastors and an outline of the congregation’s history will mark the 10:30 a.m. worship service. The music service will consist of hymns from the 1860s. A barbecue meal under a tent will follow the morning service. After lunch, activities related to the 1860s will be available. Event
Ken James has been named pastor emeritus at First Baptist Church in Hillsboro. The observation was made in conjunction with the congregation’s 139th anniversary. He served the church more than 15 years as pastor, and he now is chaplain at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.
