The Baptist General Convention of Texas celebrated its 140th anniversary on June 29. Julio Guarneri, executive director of the BGCT, reflected on the convention’s legacy in a Facebook post: “On June 29, 1886, five different state Baptist bodies came together to establish the Baptist General Convention of Texas. They had their first meeting at First Baptist Church in Waco. From the very beginning, we were involved in evangelism, missions, higher Christian education, and benevolence,” Guarneri said.

Christy Reed will assume leadership of Wayland Baptist University’s Lubbock campus as interim executive director and dean on July 1, following the retirement of Judy Jarratt, who concludes a 50-year career in education. Reed has served as assistant executive director and assistant dean of the Lubbock campus, providing leadership for academic programs, faculty, and student services while helping guide the continued growth of the campus. She also serves as professor of education.

Philip Tallon, professor and dean of Houston Christian Univeristy’s School of Christian Thought, and Lynn Cohick, director of Houston Theological Seminary, will lead HCU seminary and graduate students on a weeklong trip to Oxford to study the life and legacy of the Inklings, a writers group centered on authors C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The HCU group will stay at Yarnton Manor and hear lectures from Michael Ward, HCU professor of apologetics and one of the world’s leading C.S. Lewis scholars, and Simon Horobin, professor of Oxford English language and literature. The group also will tour Oxford with Julia Golding, director of the Oxford Centre.
