She Is Mine: A War Orphan’s Incredible Journey of Survival by Stephanie Fast (D&S Publishing)

She is Mine is the autobiographical story of a book fast200Korean war orphan, abandoned to roam the countryside at age 4. Stephanie Fast learned how to steal food and clothing to survive, and she endured persecution because of her biracial ethnicity. The author has no memory of her birth name.

Covered with lice, boils and layers of caked-on dirt, she was tortured by farmers when caught for thievery. Eventually, she was thrown on a garbage dump and left to die. Too weak from malnutrition to help herself, she doesn’t remember how long she drifted in and out of consciousness, only that her finger tips bled and stung from rat bites.

In this near-death condition, she was miraculously rescued. Her journey to accepting the love of people and the love of Jesus inspires hope that terrible wrongs can be overcome.

Stephanie Fast has used her experience to speak globally about the plight of orphans, raising the awareness of this tragic issue. Supremely well written, this book is a compelling read you won’t want to miss. However, take heed; the author’s account of suffering may keep you awake at night.
