Paul and Silas were apprehended, beaten, and thrown in jail without an investigation as to why they were in the city.

Paul and Silas faced persecution, false accusations for causing an uproar, and false imprisonment, and yet while in jail, in the middle of the night, they could be heard praying and singing to God.

They did not complain; they did not protest as Roman citizens to get out of jail.

They praised God and prayed to him with confidence he would hear them.

The other prisoners listened. Paul and Silas did not respond in a normal way to being thrown in jail. These men demonstrated an ability to praise God in adverse circumstances.

God heard their prayers and caused an earthquake to shake the jail. God rules heaven and Earth and will use natural resources to accomplish his will.

The prison doors swung open, and everyone’s chains fell off.

Interestingly, Paul and the others did not flee the jail. They stayed in the middle of the chaos. The other prisoners were frightened and didn’t know what to do. Paul took control of the situation, and all the prisoners stayed.

Roman law stated if a jailer lost a prisoner, the jailer would receive the same punishment as the prisoner. The guard thought he had lost all the prisoners. Most likely, some of the prisoners were sentenced to death. Rather than face the punishment at the hands of others and the humiliation, the guard decided to commit suicide.

Paul noticed the jailer and stopped him from killing himself by letting him know all the prisoners were present. What a turn of events! The jailer was the actual prisoner, bound to Roman law. Paul, the prisoner, was freed from his chains. Paul saved the guard’s life rather than let him commit suicide.

The jailer rushed into the cell and fell at Paul and Silas’s feet. He asked a spiritual question every human being must ask.

The actions of the prisoners saved the guard from physical death. He wanted to know how to be spiritually saved.

The jailer heard the prayers and praises of Paul and Silas coming from the jail cells since the time they arrived.

He experienced an earthquake that broke the chains free from the prisoners. He realized Paul and the other prisoners saved his life by not running away.

All of this led to the jailer acknowledging Paul and Silas had something he needed: salvation. Leading a prison guard to Christ may not have been on Paul and Silas’ original evangelism strategy.

However, God orchestrated all these events so the jailer and his entire family could encounter Jesus. Paul presented a simple gospel message, and the guard and his family believed.
