Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Lance Wood: Supper Surprise (Luke 7:36-50; Micah 7:18-19; Hebrews 4:16)
Lance Wood, pastor of First Baptist Church in Clarendon, Texas, describes how an invitation to supper is exciting to him. Growing up on the farm, lunch got him by, but supper was the noteworthy meal. Jesus was invited to supper. At what should have been a noteworthy occasion for one reason, a woman shows up, and supper becomes noteworthy for an entirely different reason. At this supper, the truth is brought to light. The surprise is where the truth is found and what happens next.
This sermon was delivered during the morning worship service at First Baptist Church in Clarendon, Texas, on Jan. 5, 2020. The manuscript for this sermon is available here.
