Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Jay Abernathy: House of Faith: The Door (Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Matthew 7:13-14)
Jay Abernathy, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Woodville, focused on the main entrance to a house—the door. God told the Israelites in the wilderness to “write [my commandments] on the doorframes of your houses” (Deuteronomy 6:9). God’s laws were to characterize God’s people all the time.
In a similar way, “there needs to be something at the front of our lives that obviously identifies us as belonging to Christ … if we belong to Christ,” Abernathy said.
A door is a boundary between the outside and inside. Jesus says there is a way into salvation that isn’t exclusive, even if it isn’t easy. The door is open to all who will receive Jesus by faith. The door to a Christian’s life should clearly declare that faith.
This sermon was delivered Apr. 11, 2021, for the morning worship service of First Baptist Church in Woodville. It was the first in a series titled “House of Faith.”
