Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. James Hassell: Dealing with Gospel Disinformation (Galatians 1:6-12)
James Hassell, pastor of Westoak Woods Baptist Church in Austin, declared part of living a healthy spiritual life means being clear “individually and as a church on what the gospel really is.”
Paul regularly dealt with false gospels during his ministry in Asia Minor. In his letter to the churches in Galatia, Paul gives his unvarnished view of false gospels and those who propagate them.
One such false gospel was that of the Judaizers, who followed after Paul and added legalism to his teachings about Jesus. Hassell likened legalism to a metastatic cancer and laid out the cure, beginning with recognizing its shortcomings and scams.
Hassell concluded with a clear explanation of the gospel—the good news of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
This sermon was delivered Sept. 18, 2022, for the morning worship service of Westoak Woods Baptist Church in Austin. It is the second in a series titled “Healthy Living.”
