Chris Powell: A Go-Forward God
Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. Chris Powell: A Go-Forward God (Genesis 29:15-31)
Chris Powell, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Monahans, compared life to a race, describing wrong ways to go about a race. The object of a race is to go forward toward the finish line. A relationship with God is similar.
Life with God is more than the initial conversion or a spiritual mountaintop experience. God calls people to move forward, not to live in the past. God calls people to develop and grow in their faith. Powell examined how this kind of relationship was demonstrated in the life of Jacob. God had plans for Jacob based on a promise for the future.
This sermon was delivered Sept. 19, 2021, for the morning worship service of First Baptist Church in Monahans, as part of a series titled “The Amazing Grace Race.”
