Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Likewise, Baptists Preaching offers a repository of Baptist preaching for future study and research. To recommend a sermon to be featured in Baptists Preaching, please contact eric.black@baptiststandard.com.

Bruce Webb: Pick Up Your Harp and Sing! (Psalm 137, Isaiah 9 & 11)

Nancy and Bruce Webb

Bruce Webb, senior pastor of The Woodlands First Baptist Church, spoke to the “dark and uncertain” circumstances in Afghanistan following the U.S. withdrawal. He expressed his gratitude to U.S. military veterans who served in Afghanistan. He also stated the concern of Afghanis about their future under the Taliban.

Webb sees in Psalm 137 language expressing the emotions of devastated people. He also sees the need to go beyond such anger and bitterness, finding the needed words in Isaiah 9 and 11. The Isaiah passages contain the promise of God’s reign that will restore hope and will bring victory.

He finished by calling his hearers to “throw the weight of your life” on the side of God’s kingdom with their lives and their work.

This sermon was delivered Aug. 22, 2021, for the morning worship services of The Woodlands First Baptist Church. It is part of a series titled “Hypernikao,” a Greek word meaning “more than conquerors” that appears only once in the Bible—Romans 8:37.
