Opinion: Bastrop County survivors forge forward, one year after fire

Even before its flames were extinguished, Bastrop County residents were determined they would not be victims of the largest wildfire in Texas history. They were survivors, and survivors push forward no matter how trying the circumstances.

  • Plentiful harvest

The area of South Asia where I served has the highest concentration of spiritual lostness in the world, but don’t let that statement scare you. While the country is covered in darkness, God’s light is shining brighter than ever.

  • Flooded by love

I woke up and looked around my room at two empty beds where two great people had been.

  • Lessons learned

It is not a question whether this summer was challenging. At moments it was flat-out difficult.

  • Bringing peace to a heavy heart

Among our other tasks, our team visited people in Puebla, Mexico.

  • Comfortable surroundings

One thing I have found really awesome since arriving in East Asia is that it is not so different from home. We are living in a very nice westernized apartment that has pretty much everything I could want—minus Internet, so far.

  • From tears to joy

For most of my time in Asia, I felt a lot spiritual warfare happening.

  • Rain or shine

When we had our last block party of the summer, it underscored the sad realization that we only had a few short weeks left in Philly.

  • Sharing our dreams

My three-week trip to East Asia included two camps—one for college students and the second one where I volunteered to serve poor children.

  • Counting blessings

I know the Lord blessed me greatly by placing me at Texas Baptist Children’s Home this summer.

  • Answered prayer

God is so good, and I am beyond excited about all his work with Elevation Church in Loveland, Colorado.

  • Seeing the hand of God

Our last destination for our summer mission was Puebla, Mexico. Even though we were only there for eight days, it felt that we had been there a whole month. During those days, Eunice and I worked with five churches in five towns—San Luis Ajajalpan, San Luis, Sab Pablo, Tepeaca and Yehualtepec. This meant we were only with a church for 24 hours or 48 hours maximum, making our time in Puebla extremely busy and hectic.
