Rally contradicts Baptists' heritage

Give the benefit of the doubt to organizers of the “Justice Sunday: Stopping the Filibuster Against People of Faith” rally and nationwide simulcast. Given their nature, they didn't mean to be sacrilegious. But they sure acted like it.

They held a partisan political rally in the sanctuary of a Baptist church during the worship hour on Sunday evening. They insinuated that citizens who don't agree with them are anti-Christian and opponents of faith. The Senate majority leader delivered one of their major addresses. They repeatedly asked participants and TV/Internet viewers to contact their senators and urge them to overturn a longstanding Senate procedure.

In Bible times, such partisan political practice in a place of worship would have been called desecrating the temple. Today, we can call it sacrilegious.

Why pope news?

I respect the Catholic religion, even though I do not entirely agree with it.

We have been inundated by the mass media the last few weeks about the late pope's illness, death and burial, and the procedure for electing a new pope. This is in spite of the popular pope's lax dealing with the sex scandals among the priests.

So, I am wondering why the Standard, a Baptist publication, felt obligated to publish a full-page special report on choosing a new pope in the April 18 edition.
