City Core Initiative, a Baptist General Convention of Texas-supported effort to revitalize urban centers spiritually, is sponsoring a multi-denominational meeting featuring author Leonard Sweet aimed at training leaders for urban ministry.
The Urban Training Institute of the Southwest, July 19-22 in Dallas, features a combination of lecture-style sessions and field visits to urban ministries in the Dallas area.
Sweet, author and evangelism professor at Drew Theological School in Madison, N.J, will be the keynote speaker during a day devoted to ministering to “emerging generations.”
Jimmy Dorrell, executive director of Mission Waco, will speak during a day dedicated to discussing urban issues and community development. Bob Lupton, executive director of FCS Urban Ministries, will talk about how to develop and restore communities.
The final day of the conference will focus on ministry models and transformational leadership. David Frenchak, executive director of Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education; Milfred Minatrea, director of the BGCT Missional Church Center; and Ted Elmore, who leads the BGCT’s prayer ministries, will guide sessions.
Tommy Goode, director of City Core Initiative, said the event provides an opportunity for ministers to discuss ministering in the urban centers of cities that many congregations have abandoned.
“Building a strong, passion-driven leadership team is essential to effective urban ministry,” Goode said. “The seminar is designed to be a strategic learning experience for ministry teams, and our goal is for ministers to be able to take back to their churches an action plan for leading their congregation to the next level of being transformational.”
The North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Dallas-Fort Worth Lutheran Inter-church Network Coalition, Central Dallas Ministries and numerous Texas Baptist groups such as Dallas Baptist Association, Dallas Baptist University and Truett Seminary have been involved in planning the event.
