Why pope news?
I respect the Catholic religion, even though I do not entirely agree with it.
We have been inundated by the mass media the last few weeks about the late pope's illness, death and burial, and the procedure for electing a new pope. This is in spite of the popular pope's lax dealing with the sex scandals among the priests.
So, I am wondering why the Standard, a Baptist publication, felt obligated to publish a full-page special report on choosing a new pope in the April 18 edition.
Letters are welcomed. Send them to marvknox@baptiststandard.com; 250 words maximum.
"Being a traditionalist isn't a bad thing if the new pope is willing to go all the way back to the original tradition of being a servant, one who washes the feet of others. Being a fundamentalist isn't a bad thing either, if he focuses on the most fundamental fundamentals–love and service."

"I surrendered completely and let God work in the situation. I would not be here if not for Jesus."
Ashley Smith
Hostage held after the Atlanta courtroom shooting in March (RNS)
"You feel loved when someone makes much of you–that's the air you breathe in America. Love is not making much of you. It is laboring and suffering, if necessary, to enthrall another person that will make them eternally and infinitely happy."
John Piper
Minneapolis pastor & author of Desiring God (BP)
"We urge Congress to resist any attempts to gut domestic programs that assist the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society."
Sharon Daly
Catholic Charities' vice president for social policy (RNS)

Travis Avenue Church in Fort Worth and Riverbend Retreat Center have dedicated a new family lodge at the camp to Joe and Tomi Lenamon. The 3,800-square-foot log building, given as a gift from the church to the camp, has four private rooms, a loft bedroom with five bunk beds, a full kitchen and dining area, and two gathering areas, including a great room with a fireplace. The construction was done by Texas Baptist Men, Campers on Mission, SOWERS and local church groups. The Lenamons are longtime members of the church, and he has served on the camp committee and now board of directors of the camp for 32 of the 38 years it has been in existence. Around the State
