Baker, Morgan among Southwestern honorees

FORT WORTH (BP)—Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has named two Texans among the four recipients of its 2005 distinguished alumni awards.

They include Dick Baker, hymn writer, music evangelist and former minister of music for Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, and John Morgan, pastor of Sagemont Baptist Church in Houston, as well as Jerry Rankin, president of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board, and Gary Chapman, associate pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., and author of The Five Love Languages.

The awards will be presented at the national alumni luncheon June 22 at 12:30 p.m. in the Renaissance Nashville Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., site of the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting.

WMU helping launch social ministries network

(BP)—Woman’s Missionary Union is helping launch a network for seminary graduates who majored in Christian social ministries and church social work.

“The purpose of this network is to help re-establish and support the Baptist culture of church social work,” said Wanda Lee, executive director of the Baptist missions auxiliary. “Those who have been called to work in church social ministries will be affirmed and encouraged as they connect with others who share their passion for service.”

In partnership with Baptist educational institutions such as Baylor University, the Church Social Work Network will provide social workers with opportunities for continuing education credit, conferences, professional development and networking, fellowship and reunions.
